Hunting

Dad and I love hunting upland game birds over pointing dogs. There isn't much that’s more beautiful than watching a ring-necked rooster take flight. Dad’s dogs are Brittanys; mine are year-old German Shorthaired Pointers. We get out to the field, get our gear, pick a direction, and let the dogs go. We’ll talk later about getting the dogs to hunt where you want them to. We tend to hunt toward a body of water because the birds will run or hunker down before they’ll jump into the air. The pond or lake gives us a natural “backstop” where the birds will eventually be out of options and have to take flight. You can do the same thing with a steep hill, but be prepared to climb it. Just ask Storm, one of my “twins.” On his first hunt when he was 6 months old, he and I chased a chukar Dad had shot up to the top of a hill. Storm was ready to go at the top – I was winded.
