To cause a dog to do your bidding, you first have to get its attention. That is normally done by calling its name. If you have used a natural tone of voice in communicating with your dog, using an unnatural tone might cause it to cower.
However, I guess that doesn’t hold true in the field when you have to raise your voice to be heard. And, that’s not the point of this command. “SIT” is usually used to offer your dog a treat. In the writer’s experience, dogs don’t like to sit for long periods (on command). Hence, to reward your pet for compliance with this or any other command is recommended. Our pets do have feelings. Maybe not in the way we humans do, but it becomes obvious in their demeanor. Some have said that when you pat a dog’s side, you should also pat the opposite side. True or not doesn’t matter. The act of affection does. Using a short rope or lead attached to your dog’s collar, give your pet the command “Storm (pets name) – Sit”. Pull up slightly on the lead and press lightly on his rump at the top of his hips. Reward on compliance!!
